Quarter Two in Review

Aloha kākou,

Here we are, Tier 5. In the matter of three months the outdoor mask mandate was lifted, Hawaiʻi vaccinated just shy of 60% of their residents and we rose two tiers. Parties of 25 can now mingle indoors and 75 can congregate outdoors. Sporting events are back on, concert tickets are on sale and travelers vaccinated in Hawaiʻi are now free to move in and out of the islands without pre-testing or quarantining. The promise of a restriction-free life is just a 70% vaccination rate away.

What does this mean for the non-profits still actively in pursuit of keeping the communities hit by COVID-19 the hardest fed? At Chef Hui we are looking at how we can keep serving our community in a way that best supports and honors their needs while not creating a sense of dependency. We do this in our Mahiʻai Meal Kits program by influencing families to cook more at home with local ingredients and offering them tools such as cooking videos and recipes for guidance and inspiration.

We had our first Sustainable Seafood Council meeting, in partnership with Conservation International Hawaiʻi, this quarter. With this group of highly motivated, influential chefs we aim to promote the changes needed in Hawaiʻi to help protect our ocean for generations to come. It is with programs like these that we begin to extend our services from not only focusing on the health of our community but of our islands as well.

We appreciate your continued support. By taking an interest in our Impact Report you show concern for our community and islands too.

Mahalo piha,

Chef Hui

Closing Thoughts

As we joyfully catapult into a world without restrictions may we sprint with caution. The reality is that we have moved recklessly forward before forcing us to take a giant step back. Remember the second stay-at-home order in August 2020? We are still living in a precarious world with COVID variants that could change our narrative at any moment. Donʻt put away those masks quite yet, but do find ways to continue to support local agriculture, ocean conservation and our mom-and-pop businesses. Tourism may be back, but sustaining the #supportlocal movement we strengthened during the pandemic’s darkest days is what will save us in the long run.
